		<description>Stanford Design - Making second hand shopping sexy
Palo Alto, 2013
Team mates: Adam Miller, Brenna Hanly, Ben Austin

As my thesis project at Stanford, my team and I have been focusing on enhancing the second hand shopping experience.

During the first few weeks of the project we interviewed several thrift, vintage, and consignment store owners, as well as enthusiastic and indifferent shoppers. We focused on what the individuals were saying as well as watching their in store behavior. After finding an extreme user, a young second hand power shopper, we realized that we wanted to focus on enhancing the hunt.

&#60;img src="http://payload140.cargocollective.com/1/5/177178/5112447/User Interviews Collage Small2.jpg" width="545" height="436" width_o="545" height_o="436" src_o="http://payload140.cargocollective.com/1/5/177178/5112447/User Interviews Collage Small2_o.jpg" data-mid="28443331"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Armed with new insights, we created and iterated on several prototypes, we focused on both changing the shopping environment and creating products to help amplify the experience. To test our prototypes, we took to the streets of San Francisco and spoke with second hand customers.

At this point we've designed an innovative new application that we are testing out with shoppers. We've received quite a bit of positive feedback and look forward to iterating further. More information and design images to come!

		<description>Stanford Design - Walnut Chair Design
Stanford, 2012

A chair designed for the 2012 Personal Statements design show at Stanford.

Initially I had hopes of creating a throne chair, but after doing my research, I realized that I was more interested in a modern design. I sketched up multiple iterations of the chair before getting to work in the shop. I chose walnut because I wanted a dark, rich color. Adding a pop with the fabric for the cushion.

All pieces were hand crafted. The seat back was created using a laminated wood bending process. A piece of walnut was resawed into thinner pieces, these pieces were then glued together and bent around a form.

		<description>Hoover Tower Woodcut
Stanford, 2012

Taking the Hoover tower as inspiration, I sketched the image onto a thick piece of particle board. Using hand tools, I carved out the outline of the structure. I then tried to replicate old woodcutting techniques to add clouds and sun shine into the piece. This block was printed nine times with different monotype (color) backgrounds.
&#60;img src="http://payload104.cargocollective.com/1/5/177178/4392302/Woodblock Collage.jpg" width="670" height="603" width_o="1200" height_o="1080" src_o="http://payload104.cargocollective.com/1/5/177178/4392302/Woodblock Collage_o.jpg" data-mid="23256387"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Broken Heart Woodcut
Stanford, 2012

This image was created using Illustrator. After several iterations, I used the laser cutter to etch out the negative image on a 1/4' piece of plywood. The wood prints quite well, although it is possible to see the grains vertically along the print.
&#60;img src="http://payload104.cargocollective.com/1/5/177178/4392302/Heart Collage.jpg" width="670" height="335" width_o="1200" height_o="600" src_o="http://payload104.cargocollective.com/1/5/177178/4392302/Heart Collage_o.jpg" data-mid="23256397"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

This image was also created using Illustrator and laser etched into a piece of plywood.

		<description>Stanford Design - Silver Rings
Stanford, 2012

This past year I had the opportunity to cast original pieces of jewelry through a silversmithing course. I carved two rings out of wax, cast them in silver, and polished them.

The first piece is a chunky asymmetrical design. I started this piece with no true expectations of my final design and just worked with the material. The second ring is a simple heart design. The heart itself is raised higher than the band.

Personal Design - 3D Printed Rings
Stanford, 2012

After learning how much I enjoyed making jewelry, I decided to design several pieces using CAD software (123D and Solidworks). To confirm the dimensions of the pieces, I 3D printed models using an Objet printer.

Using Shapeways, I then printed them in different materials - stainless steel, alumide, and plastic. Images to come shortly.</description>

		<description>Stanford Design - A chandelier designed using test tubes
Palo Alto, 2012

As part of my formgiving course, we were given the opportunity to create an illuminated object. Taking inspiration from science and my love for simple repeating elements, I selected test tubes as my main element.

Materials used: 36 18x150ml test tubes, hand made silicone stoppers, music wire, plywood, and a sand blasted glass cylinder

We created two phone applications that would enhance the health of a chosen user group. As a team we selected parents of children with special needs. We interviewed two families for our research and extrapolated insights from what we heard.

		<description>Stanford Design - A cake based on a Passover tradition
Palo Alto, 2011

As an art project I created a cake that resembles Afikomen, a part of the Passover Seder. Typically a half piece of matzo is wrapped in a napkin and hidden for children to find. The Afikomen is considered "dessert," but I don't feel it is the most delicious option. Instead, I created a double layer cake and covered it in fondant so it resembles a wrapped piece of matzo. I served it with Manischewitz, one of my favorite Passover beverages, and charoset, a dish made of apples, nuts, and wine.
